Want to change things? Be a tug boat.

Tugboats can turn enormous ships around with gentle nudges and determined pressure. You should be like a tugboat in your community or area where you have influence.

Tug boats might look small but they’re incredibly powerful. They’re the boats everyone relies on in a port to keep everything moving smoothly and avoid or fix disasters. Their high torque engines give them lots of power at low speeds.

More torque (not more talk) means more action

Tug boats give another perspective on decision-making and the idea of creating change your own way, particularly if you’re not a loud, forceful person.

It’s possible to play a long game and patiently keep attending to issues that are important to you, to ultimately shift something. Tug boats show us that persistent low-speed nudges can swing around something that seemed looming and solid. Indeed, they’re more effective than tackling something head-on at full speed.

If you’re interested in getting elected or finding a position where you could influence something, I’ve written a book you might find helpful: Thank Goodness You’re Here!, now get elected and make a difference. It’s a practical and humorous guide to planning and running your own election campaign without losing your soul, your friends or your sense of humour.
